Frog Week 2025
Frog Week is a collaborative effort between PA Woods and Forests and Woods and Forests Media. PA Woods and Forests and Woods and Forests Media are separate entities and collaborate yearly on Frog Week. This story is being told from the perspective of Woods and Forests Media.

Salamanders and Snakes of Ackermann
You can find salamanders and snakes throughout the nature preserve. It will be more likely to observe a snake during the day near the rock quarry and the floodplain. Many semi-aquatic salamanders are more likely to be observed in the floodplain under rocks and rotting logs, and are more commonly observed at night. Mole and forest salamanders will be more active around the rock quarry and in the highlands, also at night.

Frogs of Ackermann
The Otto and Magdalene Ackermann Nature Preserve is a property maintained by the Westmoreland Land Trust and is located at 13260 Ardara Rd, Ardara, PA 15615.
Depending on the time of year, you can find frogs and toads anywhere in the nature preserve. Spring peepers have been observed at the highest point of the preserve in the late fall, and wood frogs have been observed navigating the trails far away from the floodplain in late February. You can find frogs and toads in early spring through the first frost.

Pitt-Johnstown Soil Judging Contest
The University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown Department of Geosciences and the Environment hosted the Region 1 Soil Judging Competition on Oct. 8-10, bringing together more than a dozen colleges and universities and over 100 student competitors.
Soil judging is a competitive scientific event where students apply their classroom knowledge in the field. Participants evaluate and classify soil properties — such as texture, drainage, and horizon development — to assess their suitability for agriculture, construction, and environmental uses. The contest provides hands-on experience that prepares students for careers in agriculture, environmental consulting, engineering, and natural resource management.
